I resigned from my medical technologist work and pursued a new unknown path, a virtual assistant.
I’ve always wanted to become a healthcare worker since I was 7. I know that being able to help the sick in my ways is my fulfillment when I was young. So one day, I promised to myself that I’ll be able to save someone’s life in my little ways. Thus, I spent the rest of my years pursuing a passion where I can help patients even behind closed doors, as a medical technologist.
Finally, at the age of 20, I became licensed to help. I took pride in helping patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals, knowing that the results I produced were crucial for patient diagnoses and treatment plans.
The laboratory was a world of its own, with its own language, rhythms, and demands. While I valued the technical expertise I developed and the critical role I played in patient care, something within me yearned for a different kind of connection and impact.
The turning point came during the global pandemic. It took me years to finally decide to resign but I started exploring the virtual world. And when I finally found the best service where I can help providers, that was when I had to make one of the biggest decisions that changed my life: I officially resigned from my work.
The healthcare system was under immense pressure, and the importance of administrative support became more evident than ever. I watched as healthcare professionals struggled not just with patient care, but with the overwhelming burden of administrative tasks. This sparked a realization: while my skills as a medical technologist were valuable, my true calling might lie in a different area of healthcare. I took the leap because I was drawn to the possibility of supporting providers to focus more on patient care.
The role promised flexibility, the opportunity to work remotely, and the chance to develop new skills. So I attended paid training, did my research, study the skills that a medical virtual assistant should have. And thank god, He sent a person who believed in my skills and capabilities.
I developed more skills in medical billing, scheduling, patient communication, and the various software tools essential for virtual assistance. The learning curve was steep, but the challenge invigorated me. Each new skill acquired was a step closer to my goal. Hence, I can provide those services with quality work because of my experience.
Looking back in that journey, Do I have regrets?
My answer to that is, I absolutely have no regrets. In fact, I still get to fulfill my dream — To help patients, this time across the world, not in the literal sense but rather indirectly. Because even though the doctors I now serve, these doctors can reach more patients and focus more on treating them!
And nothing can be ever more rewarding than that!
